      Thinking of leasing a Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class?

The U.S. News Best Price Program saves users an average of $1,824 off the MSRP, and a lower price equals lower monthly lease payments. That means you could see a savings of $90 a month on a 36-month lease.

      Drive and Performance 7.9 /10

The GLE might look vaguely sporty, but it’s primarily a comfort shuttle. That’s not to say it can’t handle itself in curves because it can, especially when fitted with the optional adaptive air suspension. The GLE shows its best self in a straight line, taking on all manner of road surface. It takes a lot to upset the GLE’s natural cushion and compliant suspension, which effortlessly neutralizes most bumps and broken road.

When it comes to powertrains, the 2024 GLE offers a few options. First up is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet torque that comes with the GLE 350. Mercedes says it can hustle up to 60 mph in about 7 seconds. The same engine pairs with an electric motor in the new GLE 450e plug-in hybrid, which offers 381 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough thrust to cover the zero-to-60 dash in 5.8 seconds. Moving up to the GLE 450 adds a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, and it features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This setup saves fuel in stop-and-go traffic, delivers short bursts of power for quicker acceleration and helps launch the GLE 450 from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Finally, the GLE 580 comes with a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, also equipped with mild-hybrid assist. This beast makes 510 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque and sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds.

All engines pair with a nine-speed transmission that delivers the smooth and effortless acceleration characteristic of Mercedes’s torque-rich engines. Low-end power is satisfying and abundant, even in the base trim four-cylinder, thanks to quick turbo response and, in the upper trims, the mild-hybrid assist. The GLE 450e shares the same character, with the bonus of electric-only operation and a graceful switch over to the gas engine when the battery runs dry. Depending on trim, the GLE can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped.

      Fuel Economy 9.6 /10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 is EPA-rated at up to 23 mpg combined (20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway). The GLE 450 delivers 22 mpg combined (19/26 city/highway), and the V8-powered GLE 580 comes in at 17 mpg combined (15/20 city/highway), not surprising given its potent output. Overall, these estimates are exceptional for the luxury midsize SUV segment. The GLE 450e plug-in hybrid has not been rated for fuel economy, but Mercedes says it has an all-electric driving range of up to 48 miles.

      Interior 8.1 /10

Even if the GLE’s starting price makes you flinch, those doubts disappear inside the cabin. Fit and finish is impeccable, and standard features that include synthetic leather, soft-touch panels and shapely seats feel like smart money. Wood and metal trim reinforce Benz’s luxury aesthetic, while the prominent dash displays — one for the driver, one for infotainment — and the latest MBUX software update firmly pull the GLE into the future. The GLE seats five, and an optional third-row accommodates two more passengers. Tall occupants will find plenty of headroom in the first two rows. The third row is handy and OK for kids, but most adults won’t want to be back there too long. The GLE offers great outward visibility for the driver.

The GLE has 33.3 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, among the most in the luxury midsize SUV class. Folding down the rear seats yields 74.9 cubes, a large and useful volume for warehouse grocery runs or a few extra suitcases for your trip to the airport. The GLE comes standard with a hands-free power liftgate.

      Value 7.0 /10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE has a below-average value rating for the luxury midsize SUV segment. We determine value based on the vehicle’s estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle’s MSRP for its base and top trims.

      Safety 9.4 /10

The 2024 GLE gets mostly good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and this Mercedes comes with a decent number of standard driver-assistance features. These include a surround-view camera system, automatic high-beam headlights and pedestrian detection.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the GLE’s second-row outboard seats and a tether anchor for the second-row middle seat.

      Quality and Reliability 81.0 /100

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE has a predicted reliability score of 81 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

      Critics’ Rating 9.1 /10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE receives a critics’ rating that is good for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.

System cannot overcome the laws of physics, nor is it a substitute for being attentive to driving, traffic and conditions. Please always wear your seat belt. Performance is limited by available traction, which snow, ice and other conditions can affect. Always drive carefully, consistent with conditions. Best performance in snow is obtained with winter tires.

Off-road driving should only be attempted by drivers with the necessary skill, experience and understanding of the vehicle’s limits. Read Operator’s Manual before driving off-road.

Certain features and vehicle settings are not for use on public roads or where people, animals or obstacles may be within range of the vehicle. Always obey local laws. See Operator’s Manual for additional warnings and information.

While the navigation system provides directional assistance, the driver must remain focused on safe driving behavior, including paying attention to traffic and street signs. Maps do not cover all areas or all routes within an area.

Lower-aspect-ratio tires and accompanying wheels may provide substantially increased treadwear, increased tire noise and reduced ride comfort. Serious wheel and tire damage may occur if the vehicle is operated on rough or damaged road surfaces or upon encountering road debris or obstacles. These tires are not designed for use on snow and ice. Winter tires mounted on appropriately sized and approved wheels are recommended for driving in those conditions.

      2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Overview

Is the Mercedes-Benz GLE a Good SUV?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE is a great luxury SUV by just about every measure. It has a sumptuous cabin with roomy seating and cargo space, many advanced safety features, and a sleek yet intuitive infotainment system. It’s comfortable to drive when the roads turn rough, yet it still feels planted and composed when navigating turns. Additionally, it’s available with a wide range of engines, from a stout four-cylinder to a pair of inline-sixes and a searing V8. There’s a GLE for just about any taste.

Should I Buy the Mercedes-Benz GLE?

You should definitely consider the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE if you’re shopping for a luxury midsize SUV . It’s an excellent all-rounder with few obvious downsides, apart from its rather steep $55,700-and-up price tag. If you want a luxury SUV with more of a value proposition, check out the less-expensive Acura MDX , Genesis GV80 , or Lexus RX 350 .

      2021 vs. 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE: What’s the Difference?

Mercedes-Benz made two notable updates to the 2022 GLE. All trims now come standard with automatic high-beam headlights, which were previously optional. Mercedes also dropped the V8-powered GLE 63 S trim for 2022, though this model is expected to return for 2023.

Here are the key changes for the Mercedes-Benz GLE over the last few years:

      • 2022: automatic high-beam headlights added to standard features list; GLE 63 S trim dropped
      • 2021: GLE 53 and GLE 63 S trims debuted; coupe body style added
      • 2020: fully redesigned (start of second generation) with more passenger space, a gentler ride, sharper handling, and a new infotainment system; offered in GLE 350, GLE 450, and GLE 580 trims
      • 2019: plug-in-hybrid model discontinued
      • 2018: AMG GLE 43 engine received 23-horsepower boost

      Pricing

      How Much is a 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 has a $55,700 starting price, which is slightly higher than average for the class. The midrange GLE 450 and GLE 53 models are priced at $63,500 and $73,550, respectively, while the luxe GLE 580 rings in at $80,200. The GLE is positioned and priced in the middle of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, between the compact GLB and GLC SUVs and the full-size GLS .

      Mercedes-Benz GLE Versus the Competition

      Mercedes-Benz GLE vs. BMW X5

The BMW X5 echoes many of the GLE’s highlights. The X5 is sporty yet comfortable to drive, it has a variety of refined engine options, and it’s offered with a range of intuitive tech and safety features. The X5 also has a nicely trimmed interior with room for up to seven passengers, albeit snugly, plus an expansive cargo area. The deciding factor between these two may come down to price. The base X5 costs a few thousand dollars more than the GLE, though it packs a brawnier six-cylinder engine as standard. Ultimately, both are good options.

      Mercedes-Benz GLE vs. Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 is another solid choice in the luxury midsize SUV class . Like the GLE, the Q7 has a range of muscular engine options, a posh and roomy cabin, a user-friendly infotainment system, and many active safety features. It’s a bit more of a bargain though. The base Q7 costs about the same as the GLE, but it comes standard with seven seats and all-wheel drive, which can bump up the GLE’s price tag by a couple thousand dollars.

      GLE Interior: Setting the Standard

      GLE Interior Quality

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE has one of the best interiors in the luxury midsize SUV class . The design is modern yet classy, and the level of fit and finish is excellent, from the soft upholstered surfaces and tight-fitting panels to the widescreen infotainment system and controls that feel substantial to operate. The cabin also remains bank-vault quiet with minimal road or wind noise, even at higher speeds. All in all, it’s a lovely place to sit.

      GLE Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The Mercedes-Benz GLE comes equipped with the MBUX infotainment system, which features a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that blends seamlessly into a 12.3-inch touch screen. This setup is a feast for the eyes, thanks to its slick graphics and snappy animations. Redundant controls make it pretty easy to use while driving. For instance, you can control the system by tapping or swiping on-screen, by using the touchpad on the center console, or via buttons on the dashboard and steering wheel. The basic menu structure is straightforward, though some functions are buried in submenus.

There’s also a virtual assistant, which is activated by saying «Hey Mercedes» followed by natural speech like «I’m cold» or «turn up the heat.» While this voice recognition system can be a handy way to adjust settings, it tends to react to unintentional commands.

      • Standard infotainment features: a 12.3-inch touch screen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, »Hey Mercedes» virtual assistant, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, wireless device charging, Bluetooth, and five USB ports
      • Available infotainment features: 13- and 25-speaker Burmester sound systems and two additional USB ports
      • Additional standard features: keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, and ambient lighting
      • Other available features: power soft-closing doors, four-zone automatic climate control, a cabin air fragrance system, a panoramic sunroof, and rear sunshades
      GLE Cargo Space

The Mercedes-Benz GLE has 33.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 74.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which is one of the largest cargo capacities among luxury midsize SUVs . There’s plenty of space for stowing large boxes, home improvement supplies, or luggage for a family vacation. A hands-free power liftgate comes standard.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t disclosed measurements for the GLE coupe’s cargo area, but subjectively it feels smaller due to the tapered roofline.

How Many People Does the GLE Seat?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE is available in SUV and four-door coupe body styles. Both have five seats, but the SUV model is available with a third row that raises the seating capacity to seven. Regardless of configuration, the front seats are well-cushioned and supportive, and they provide ample headroom and legroom for taller drivers and passengers. The second row is spacious and comfy as well. The optional third row is smaller but most will be fine back there for a short ride. No one, however, not even kids, will likely want to ride in the way back for a long trip. Outward visibility is expansive to the front and sides, though the rear sightlines are slim.

Synthetic leather upholstery and heated front seats with power adjustments are standard. Options include genuine leather upholstery, ventilated and massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated front armrests, heated and cooled cup holders, and heated second-row seats.

      GLE and Child Car Seats

The GLE has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats and a tether anchor for the middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the highest rating of Good for its ease of use.

      GLE Performance: Multi-Sport Athlete

      GLE Engine

Mercedes-Benz offers the 2022 GLE with a variety of powertrain options. First up, the GLE 350 has a 255-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and a nine-speed automatic transmission. That may not sound like a ton of power, but the engine provides a lot of low-end torque, which helps shuttle the SUV off-the-line and up to speed with urgency; the GLE 350 can dash from zero to 60 mph in a brisk seven seconds. The transmission shifts smoothly and promptly.

The GLE 450 has a 362-horsepower turbocharged inline-six that operates with an effortlessness that the base engine can’t match. This engine pulls confidently – zero to 60 mph takes 5.5 seconds – and it feels like it has power to spare, even when passing other vehicles on the highway. That’s partly due to its 48-volt mild-hybrid system (EQ Boost), which can provide an extra surge of torque when accelerating but also reduce fuel consumption in stop-and-go driving.

Next up, the GLE 53 has a 429-horsepower turbocharged and supercharged inline-six, and the GLE 580 has a 483-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8. Both also include the EQ Boost system. These models are a bit overkill, and they can hit 60 mph in around five seconds flat, albeit at the expense of lowered fuel economy. The brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system comes standard in all trims except the GLE 350, which comes standard with rear-wheel drive and is available with AWD.

      GLE Gas Mileage

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 gets an EPA-rated 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, which is about average for a luxury midsize SUV . The GLE 450 returns a loftier 21/26 mpg city/highway, while the GLE 53 and GLE 580 get a mediocre 18/22 mpg and 17/22 mpg, respectively.

      GLE Ride and Handling

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a big and heavy SUV, but it masks that heft remarkably well. The GLE feels stable and surefooted on winding roads, and it exhibits minimal body lean in tight turns. The steering is quick and well-weighted, and the brakes confidently slow the SUV down to a stop. Better still, the GLE’s adaptive suspension comfortably soaks up bumps and dips in the pavement, yielding a smooth and relaxing ride. The optional air suspension only enhances this ride comfort. Simply put, the GLE is a joy to drive.

      GLE Towing Capacity

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350, GLE 450, and GLE 580 can each tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped, which is respectable for a luxury midsize SUV . This towing capacity dips to 5,950 pounds for the rear-wheel-drive GLE 350, and it drops to 3,858 pounds for the GLE 53.

      GLE Reliability

Is the Mercedes-Benz GLE Reliable ?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE has a predicted reliability score of 80 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average, and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

      Mercedes-Benz GLE Warranty

Mercedes-Benz covers the 2022 GLE with a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.

      2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Safety

      Score: 9.6/10
      Crash Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE an overall safety rating of five out of five stars. The GLE earned five stars in the frontal and side crash tests, as well as four stars in the rollover test.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not evaluated the 2022 GLE at this time, but the nearly identical 2021 GLE received good ratings across the board.

      Safety Features

      Standard driver assistance features:

      • Rearview camera
      • Front and rear parking sensors
      • Hands-free park assist
      • Blind spot monitoring
      • Driver drowsiness detection

      GLE Dimensions and Weight

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is 16.2 feet long. Its curb weight ranges from 4,608 to 5,280 pounds.

Where Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE Built?

Mercedes-Benz builds the 2022 GLE in Alabama.

Which Mercedes-Benz GLE Model Is Right for Me?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE comes in four trims: GLE 350, GLE 450, GLE 53, and GLE 580. Each is offered in a traditional SUV body style, and the GLE 53 is also available as a four-door coupe.

The biggest difference between these trims is found under the hood. The GLE 350 has a stout four-cylinder engine, which we think is the best match for most shoppers. The GLE 450 and GLE 53 have punchier six-cylinder engines, while the GLE 580 packs a sledgehammer of a V8.

      Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 and GLE 350 4Matic

The GLE 350 has a $55,700 starting price, and it’s equipped with a 255-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. The GLE 350 4Matic variant costs $58,200, and it adds all-wheel drive.

Standard features include a 12.3-inch touch screen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless device charging, Bluetooth, five USB ports, HD Radio, satellite radio, keyless entry, push-button start, a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, and heated and power-adjustable front seats.

Additional standard features include a hands-free power liftgate, a rearview camera, parking sensors, hands-free park assist, LED headlights with automatic high beams, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, driver drowsiness monitoring, an adaptive suspension, and 19-inch wheels.

A number of options are available, including genuine leather upholstery, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated second-row seats, a pair of third-row seats, a heated steering wheel, heated front armrests, heated and cooled cup holders, four-zone automatic climate control, rear sunshades, a cabin air fragrance system, a 13-speaker stereo, a panoramic sunroof, a surround-view parking camera system, adaptive headlights, a head-up display, road sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and a Class III tow hitch.
