Test of Valvoline Synpower Full Synthetic Gear Oil — 75W-140

This is meant just to be informative and not to debate diff fluids. There isn’t a lot on this forum about Valvoline diff fluid, so I figured I would share my experience so far.

I know that Torco RGO and the Type F modifier seems to be the best tested diff fluid by other forum members, but it was going to cost me about $50 and I had to wait for it to be shipped, so I wanted to look into other options. I know $50 isn’t really expensive by any means, but I over-analyze most things and wanted to see what else was out there.

I found Valvoline for $13.99 a qt. at Advance Auto, and there are a few of them not far from me, so I was able to pick up two of them for about $20 after discount codes and speed perks. I also found the below link, which states that the addition of a supplemental friction modifier (Ford M2C-118-A, Chrysler MS-5630, or GM 1052358) IS NOT required.

My car has 90K miles right now. At 38K in 2010, I had my rear diff fluid changed by a local shop, and he used the FM but I am not sure which diff fluid (I assume GM). When I dumped it out this weekend, it was pretty foamy, which is not good. It was not black and didn’t actually look horrible aside from the foam. Not sure if it was maybe changed when I got a new clutch in December. Would they have to touch the drive shaft and dump it to drop the tranny?

Anyhow, I put 52 (32 plus 20) ounces in and some dripped out because I slightly overfilled, so it’s probably exactly at 1.6 quarts. Have less than 100 miles on it now and it doesn’t seem any louder than normal. I really only hear a slight whine in 6th, but I think I always have, so it is pretty normal for my car, and I only hear it now because I was listening for it with the radio off. Plus when my clutch was done, they put a hole in my shifter boot, so I can hear drivetrain noise more now. We’ll see if that lessens when I replace the boot.

I’ll post an update in here when I have driven it more to see if anything changes. If it seems like I am getting bad whine/chatter, I’ll likely throw in an ounce of FM and go up to 2 if it continues. If it still isn’t satisfactory at that point, I will change to Torco. I basically wanted to do this because the fluid sounded good on paper, had a good price, and I didn’t mind being a guinea pig. I have had good experience with valvoline fluids in the past.
